About White’s Mill

In 1809 Joseph Herrold built a mill on the banks of the Hocking River in Athens, OH. In 1912 the mill was purchased by the White family. Unfortunately the mill burned to the ground in 1913. Edgar White then purchased the Nathaniel Vale mill in near bye Dyesville (Meigs County)OH. The timbers were marked and the mill disassembled, put on barges that were pulled by oxen and brought to Athens where it was reassembled and added onto and where it still stands as White’s Mill. Along the way the dam washed out, folks started buying store bought and change was needed.

Mike Toomey bought the mill in the 90’s and proceeded to shift to more of a home/pet and garden retail center along with some local products. In 2016 he sold the business to long time employees Rodney Dowler and Tyler Schloss. Dowler and Schloss continue on and added too Toomey’s model.

Since, the mill has been renovated and opened for retail and even more of a local treasure. Come see for yourself.
